PC Turns On but No Display?

Your PC powers on. Fans spin. RGB lights up. But your monitor says No Signal.

This is one of the most common issues we see at VÖXBURG — and in many cases, it’s an easy fix. Follow this step-by-step guide to find out what’s stopping your display from showing up.

Before You Start

  • Turn off the PC and switch the PSU OFF.
  • Unplug the power cable.
  • Hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  • Disconnect unnecessary peripherals.

Step 1: Check the Monitor & Cable First

  • Make sure the monitor is powered on.
  • Confirm the correct input (HDMI / DisplayPort).
  • Try a different cable if available.
At least 25% of “no display” cases are caused by a bad cable or wrong input.

Step 2: Plug the Cable into the GPU (Not the Motherboard)

If you have a dedicated graphics card, your display cable must be plugged into the GPU — not the motherboard ports.

  • GPU ports = lower horizontal slots
  • Motherboard ports = vertical area near USB ports

Step 3: Reseat the Graphics Card

  • Remove the GPU completely.
  • Reinsert it firmly until it clicks.
  • Secure it with screws.
  • Reconnect all GPU power cables.

Step 4: Reseat the RAM

  • Remove all RAM sticks.
  • Install one stick in the recommended slot (usually A2).
  • Try booting, then test other sticks.

Step 5: Check Motherboard Debug LEDs

Most modern boards include debug LEDs:

  • CPU
  • DRAM
  • VGA
  • BOOT

If the VGA LED stays on, the system is failing to initialize the GPU.

Step 6: Try Integrated Graphics (If Available)

If your CPU has integrated graphics:

  • Remove the GPU.
  • Plug the display cable into the motherboard.
  • Boot and check for display.

If this works, the GPU or GPU power is likely the issue.

Step 7: BIOS / CMOS Reset

  • Remove the CMOS battery for 5 minutes.
  • Reinstall it and try booting.
  • This resets display and PCIe settings.

Step 8: When to Suspect the GPU

  • No display across multiple monitors
  • VGA debug LED stays lit
  • Integrated graphics works, GPU does not

FAQ

Q: My PC turns on but my monitor says “No Signal.” What does that mean?

It means your PC is powering up, but the display signal isn’t being sent or detected. This is commonly caused by GPU seating, RAM issues, or incorrect cable placement.

Q: Can bad RAM cause no display?

Yes. Improperly seated or faulty RAM can stop a system from completing POST, resulting in no display.

Q: Is my graphics card dead?

Not always. Many “dead GPU” cases turn out to be loose power cables, bad display cables, or BIOS configuration issues.
